MUSIC & MOVEMENT CLASSES

By engaging your baby in music classes at an early age, you nurture your baby’s musical aptitude at a critical developmental stage and take significant steps toward enriching your family’s life through active music-making. Class activities aid in baby’s holistic development—stimulating the brain, fostering physical development and cultivating listening skills—through the use of bouncing and rocking songs, sign language, finger play and body awareness games, dances and instrumental play.
ENROLLMENT: One or both semesters
TUITION: $176 per 15-week semester
MATERIALS: $35 for initial semester (parent book, CD, baby instrument kit); $29 for second semester

Toddlers are always moving! Movement is not only your toddler’s favorite new-found skill, it is also your toddler’s most effective way to learn. As the next step in your musical journey, this class brings the joy of music and movement to curious, active toddlers and their caregivers. You and your child will explore familiar and new sounds, rhythm instruments and gross motor play through songs, rhymes and dancing. Musical activities with toddlers enhance language development and help internalize steady beat.
ENROLLMENT: One or both semesters
TUITION: $176 per 15-week semester
MATERIALS: $31 per semester (parent book, CD, instrument)
KINDERMUSIK OUR TIME®
20 months to 3 years, with parent/caregiver (Music School faculty)

Prepare your child for successful learning at school and in future music studies through activities that bridge the natural connection between movement and music. Your child’s musical aptitude and listening abilities are enhanced and developed through singing, chanting, movement activities, instrument exploration, listening, dancing and interactive story time.

MATERIALS: $50 per semester (2 CDs, home activity book, 2 literature books, instrument, carrying case)
MUSICAL EXPLORERS I
3 to 4 years, with parent/caregiver (Music School faculty)

Celebrate your child’s love of nature and growing independence through activities that focus on the seasons of the year. Lessons include singing, exploring instruments, focused listening, pattern echoing, creative movement and musical games. The activities nurture your child’s musical development while providing a holistic environment for learning. Parents stay for the class, although some activities are designed for children to participate independently of their parents. An instrument demonstration by a professional musician is included each semester.
ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year
TUITION: $263 per 15-week semester
MATERIALS: $38 per semester (2 CDs, parent book, listening cards) or $70 if purchasing both semesters at once
MUSICAL EXPLORERS II
4 to 5 years, parent/caregiver attends last 10 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)

Cultivating your child’s musical development through songs, tonal and rhythm patterns, poetry and stories, movement activities, listening games, instrumental play and manipulative games, this class is the next step in your child’s musical journey. Rudimentary music skills such as pitch matching, beat competency, ensemble development and music notation are taught using themes taken from your child’s home environment and natural surroundings. An instrument demonstration by a professional musician is included each semester.
ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year
TUITION: $263 per 15-week semester
MATERIALS: $50 per semester (2 CDs, posters, notation games, instrument pages, folders, parent book)
YOUNG MUSICIANS I and II: featuring Kindermusik for the Young Child®
Year I: 5 to 6 years; parent/caregiver attends last 10 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)
PREREQUISITE: Children joining for only the second semester must be in kindergarten
Year II: 6 to 7 years; parent/caregiver attends last 10 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)
PREREQUISITE: Children must have completed Year I or be in 1st grade

Your budding musician will learn the necessary basics for future music classes, ensembles or private lessons in this four-semester sequential curriculum. In a pressure-free, developmentally appropriate environment, children explore families of the orchestra, prominent composers and multicultural music while learning to play glockenspiel, dulcimer and recorder. The program uses singing, ear-training, guided listening, creative and structured movement, ensemble work and learning musical notation to nurture comprehensive musicianship. It offers a developmentally sound approach to music literacy while also building symbolic thinking, concentration, memory and self-expression. An instrument demonstration by a professional musician is included each year.

OTHER CLASSES FOR THE YOUNG CHILD
GROUP PIANO FOR CHILDREN
7 to 9 years (Joan Fasullo)
Wednesdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Starting September 21
Formal piano lessons in a group setting! Through movement, games and creative discovery, children learn to play the piano and read music from the very first lesson, establishing a secure foundation for ongoing piano study. Classes include music theory, technique, sight-reading, composing and ensemble playing, with strong emphasis on expressive playing. Every fourth week between 5:00-7:00 p.m., students have a 20-minute private lesson (in lieu of a group lesson) to reinforce concepts from group lessons.
PREREQUISITE: Readiness assessment with instructor; daily access to a piano required

INSTRUMENTAL DISCOVERY
Grades 1 to 3 (Margaret Love)
Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Starting September 7
Identify your child’s musical interests and strengths through this exploratory class. Children experience in-depth introductions to a variety of musical instruments—including voice, violin, flute and piano—before deciding on a specific instrument for private study. Each class includes instrumental or vocal group instruction as well as games and activities that enhance basic musicianship.
ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year
TUITION: $288 per 16-week semester
MATERIALS: $50 instrument rental per semester
1-2-3, Sing with Me
6 to 8 years (Melinda Hudson-Oriani)
Wednesdays, 5:15-6:00 p.m.
Starting September 14
Let your child’s voice ring out! Children will explore their first instruments—their magnificent voices—through group singing and performing designed to increase self-confidence. Students will learn about techniques, warm-ups, breathing/supporting notes, pitch and tonal development, harmony, rounds and note-reading, as well as styles like jazz, opera and folk. This class integrates Kindermusik® concepts of movement and focused listening and provides an excellent musical foundation for children who are interested in future choral participation. Performance opportunities occur throughout the year.
